UX Design for Behavioral Change: Encouraging Daily Stretching Habits through Gamification

Masters Academic Project (Healthcare)

Duration:

4 months

How It Started

The challenge was clear: how might we help people form a daily habit of stretching? This academic project aimed to test my skills in developing, validating, and usability testing a solution with a defined problem. Instead of extensive user research, I began with storyboarding to quickly develop an MVP. The goal was to see if rewarding users with coupons for consistent stretching could motivate daily use.

The Solution

I designed a mobile app, StretchEase, that incentivizes users to stretch daily. The app rewards users with coupons to their favorite stores based on their stretching consistency. The design process included digital prototyping, ensuring the app was user-friendly and adhered to WCAG 2.1 accessibility standards. Usability tests showed strong navigation flow, indicating a well-structured information architecture.

Market Validation

Validation tests revealed that extrinsic motivation (monetary rewards) only motivated 1 out of 5 users. Users need to be intrinsically motivated first. The rushed timeline limited our ability to develop ideal user personas, highlighting the importance of detailed user research. An ad campaign had limited success, underscoring the need for well-defined user personas and targeted strategies. This project underscored the critical role of user research in creating effective solutions.

This is a brief overview. I can discuss the project and my findings in more detail during an interview. Feel free to reach out!
